Zeus Packaging has announced the completion of its 2023 carbon emissions report, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards achieving net zero emissions. This comprehensive report, with 2023 as the base year, offers an in-depth analysis of the company’s carbon footprint and sets a solid foundation for its future sustainability initiatives.

For the year 2023, Zeus’s total carbon emissions amounted to 198,000 tCO₂e, broken down as follows: Scope 1: 2.9 ktCO₂e; Scope 2: 4.9 ktCO₂e; and Scope 3: 190 ktCO₂e.

With an average of 107 tCO₂e per employee, the emissions are on par with other companies in the wrapping and packaging sector. This benchmarking allows Zeus to understand its position and identify opportunities for improvement.

This report marks the beginning of the company’s journey towards net zero, with 2023 as the baseline. Its comprehensive analysis of its operations and supply chain will guide its efforts to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability.

The ultimate goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, a commitment publicly affirmed through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This initial report provides detailed insights into Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with ongoing efforts to refine Scope 3 emissions data.

The company is working to transition its fleet from diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and introducing hybrid and electric vehicles for its sales representatives.

It is investigating corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs) to secure certified renewable energy and exploring the use of solar panels.

In scope 3, it will refine its supplier database to better understand the supply chain and identify areas for emissions reductions.

By taking these steps, Zeus Packaging is not only addressing its own carbon footprint but also paving the way for a more sustainable future in the industry.

Declan Breen, head of sustainability, said: ‘This report is a significant milestone for us, demonstrating our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and leading the way towards a more sustainable future. Our efforts to transition our fleet to more sustainable options and secure renewable energy sources are just the beginning. By setting a strong example, we hope to inspire others in our industry to follow suit. Together, we can make a substantial impact on combating climate change.
