The BPIF has announced the winners of the 2024 British Book Design & Production Awards.
There were 95 beautiful books on this year’s shortlist across 18 categories, and The Folio Society was the outright winner of the awards, finishing at the top of five categories including Photographic Books – The Planets; Scholarly, Academic & Reference Books – On the Origin of Species; Best Jacket/Cover Design – The Underground Railroad; Best British Book – Nineteen Eighty-Four and also the Book of the Year for the same title. The judges agreed it was ‘a worthy winner’ and said that ‘the book conveys astounding finishing, beautifully bound, designed and mesmerising illustrations that capture the feel of the book, with all aspects setting new heights’.
The ever popular student category was won by Roisin Scott from the National College of Art and Design, who took home the trophy for her creative book ‘You have just been diagnosed with ADHD’.
Charles Jarrold, chief executive of the BPIF, said that last years’ UK book publishers saw sales of an immense £1.8 billion and that 80% of the revenues came from physical printed book publishing, rather than digital delivery. He stated that a collaborative spirit materialises because of the existence of books and Charles stressed the importance books have upon challenging perspectives, increasing human engagement and spreading knowledge across the world.
After the awards celebration, each guest received a copy of the Book of the Night, designed by EN-TE and printed by Halstan on high quality paper by Fedrigoni, which this year followed the event’s theme of ‘Finish’ with a striking finishing by Diamond Print Services. which showcased the shortlisted and winning books – a collection of all the talent of all this year’s finalists.
