Plastic wrap shunned by shoppers

Plastic packaged products, like fruit and veg, are being shunned by the majority of shoppers according to independent research which looked at how green Brits are in the kitchen and how eco friendly their buying habits are.

In fact, according to the in-depth study of 2000 Brits commissioned by MasterClass, 16% of shoppers say they always consider how a product is packaged before buying, while 29% often consider it and 35% sometimes do.

Gizelle Anley, senior brand manager at MasterClass, a leading producer of innovative and practical cook and bakeware, said: ‘The weekly shop provides an important snapshot into the UK’s buying habits and one thing is clear, shoppers are turning their back on plastic packaged products.

‘More than three quarters of those polled take into account how a product is packaged before putting it in their shopping basket.’

Other popular ways that Brits are actively taking steps to help the planet include using a ‘bag for life’ and recycling cans, milk cartons and kitchen waste, with 66% of respondents doing this.

Reducing food waste, switching off plugs and sockets in the home when not being used, conserving water and turning down the central heating all scored highly with more than 50% taking these actions on a regular daily basis.

‘With the cost of living crisis hitting many, cutting back on food waste is more important than ever.

‘The good news is that there are plenty of ways to avoid food waste, including checking use by dates, freezing leftovers, meal planning and buying frozen food.

‘Correct food storage, such as the MasterClass Eco-Snap storage range made from recycled plastic bottles, can also have a major positive impact,’ added Gizelle.
