Packaging Solutions
Trendy unboxing videos are being shared widely across YouTube and social media. The anticipation of a new product, the look and feel of the packaging and the unpacking experience are playing an increasingly important role. This trend contrasts sharply with the dominating habit of throwing things away. The value of a product is already conveyed by the packaging and customers judge the content by the noble luxury packaging. The look and feel of said luxury packaging conveys a feeling of value. Rough and natural looking surfaces imply an impression of quality, craftsmanship and sustainability.
The choice of the optimal packaging material in terms of appearance and haptics therefore plays a major role for companies. It must be carefully coordinated with the corporate identity and should pick up on current trends. With an expanded range of IQ Grass + Packaging papers, Mondi is now serving these trends even better.
What is special about IQ Grass + Packaging is the mixture of up to 30% grass fibre and 70% FSC or PEFC certified fresh fibre pulp. There are around 14,000 different types of grass on our planet – one fifth of all vegetation. Grass is one of the fastest growing and most ecologically successful plants in the world. The combination of grass fibres and fresh fibre pulp from sustainably managed forests gives the paper its feel and natural look. It is particularly suitable for promotional cards, boutique carrier bags and liners for corrugated and solid board. It offers high strength and very good runnability in the printing process and converting.
A special feature of the paper is the individual grain and fibre optic, which gives each individual bag and packaging a slightly different look and a valuable feel. The shade – which is natural in colour – can also vary slightly due to the ingredients found in nature. This must be taken into account when designing the print.
IQ Grass + Packaging can be printed in high quality not only by flexographic printing technology but also using offset printing in all grammages. The fine pattern of the grass fibres remains visible in the paper. For a more intense colour reproduction, the paper can be pre-printed in white and before images, logos and text are printed. This increases the colour brilliance – yet the grass pattern remains visible.
Thanks to offset printing, it can be used in a variety of ways. The 80 g/m² paper can be used, for example, for classic wrapping paper or as liner for rigid boxes. The special finishing techniques especially used with high grammages, such as hot foiling and embossing, ensure the high quality appearance with eye catching effects on packaging for luxury products. Even with the highest grammage of 350 g/m² can be folded precisely and processed to a high quality.
The substrate can be used as packaging for all dry and non-greasy products. This makes it suitable for cosmetic products, spirits and high quality clothing as well as for many foods. In the higher grammages (200 g/m² and 350 g/m²) the paper can be supplied in sheet format; all other grammages are available both as sheets and on reels.
IQ Grass + Packaging is FSC and PEFC certified, free of chlorine and heavy metals. Like all Mondi brands from the paper mills in Austria and Slovakia, this grass paper is Cradle to Cradle Certified at the bronze level. It also complies with ISO standards 14001 and 9001. It is optionally available in CO2 neutral.
‘Luxury packaging is literally the first point of contact with a high quality product. It increases anticipation and conveys quality. With IQ Grass + Packaging there is also a touch of nature and uniqueness, because each packaging has its own fine pattern. With the addition of additional grammages and optimisation for high quality special finishings, the paper can be used for carrier bags, liners, promotion cards, vouchers, and food packaging and printed using web offset. It is an attractive offer for companies to charge their own brand and corporate design with positive emotions in the long term,’ explained Bernhard Cantzler, head of marketing and business development at Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.
