Ludlow Bookbinders has taken delivery of a new Polar N78 Plus less than a year after buying a second hand 92cm Polar. It has retained back up guillotine packed up and so it returned to the market in search of another machine.
‘The second hand Polars retain their value astonishingly well and the price differential between new and second hand was so close that we decided to buy new,’ said Paul Kidson, managing director of the rural bookbinding business situated just outside Ludlow. ‘I haven’t a bad word to say about the whole experience of dealing with Heidelberg UK.’
Both Polars will work on the most prestigious hand-crafted books, work that has won Ludlow Bookbinders a number of awards. As well as books, it also handles photograph albums and leather bound, clothbound and bespoke goods tailored to the customer's requirements.
Good, accurate cutting is vital for this work and Ludlow Bookbinding knows that the latest Polar N78 Plus provides that, is reliable and easy to operate.
‘Business is proceeding along positively. There are very few of us left and we rely on bibliophiles needing these rarified books,’ said Paul. As there is always a market for top quality it seems the future is bright. The Ludlow Bookbinding website quotes Charles Dickens: ‘There are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts’.
