Qualvis leads the way with sustainable packaging

Packaging Solutions

Qualvis has worked with Motion Nutrition, which was looking for a more focused, sustainable packaging solution. The e-commerce business offers organic sport supplements and needed its packaging to align with an environmentally conscious ethos.

Qualvis replaced the existing laminated pouches with plastic free, compostable cartons and the visual aesthetic has been given an update.

The board used for the cartons was Incada Silk from Iggesund, produced from the UK based Workington Mill. It was printed with Corona MGA vegetable oil based inks and a water based coating, absent of any UV products.

Corona MGA was selected as it is cradle to cradle certified. The standard recognises products that have natural properties, which can be used in a biological cycle that generates no waste, therefore conserving valuable raw materials. Products that are cradle to cradle certified will biodegrade, meaning that they can then be used as nutrients to grow trees. The trees then grow and provide raw material for ink and paper production and so the cycle starts over. To achieve accreditation, ink manufacturers have to prove their use of environmentally safe and recyclable materials, regenerative forms of energy, along with responsible use of water; this process re-affirms Qualvis’ environmental considerations in their strategic sourcing of suppliers.

Joe Welstead, Motion Nutrition CEO, said: ‘As a young organic supplements brand, our priorities were, in order of importance: sustainability, quality and speed. Qualvis was able to deliver on all three of these, head and shoulders above the competition. On this basis choosing Qualvis to produce our packaging was an easy decision.

‘When it comes to packaging it is particularly challenging to combine convenience with sustainability, but we have an ingenious solution to this quandary with Qualvis’ water based coatings and vegetable based inks, coupled with our wood pulp sachets included in the box. The product will certainly turn heads in store, with its eye catching design, and the bold visual created when the range is displayed together.’

Motion Nutrition is working towards making its entire product range plastic free. In addition to the new plastic free compostable cartons, it has also replaced plastic tubs with glass jars.
