Stora Enso releases ICC profiles for specialist book papers

Print Solutions

Following on from last year’s launch of a ‘bespoke’ ICC profile for Stora Enso’s PrimaPress lightweight super calendared publication paper, its technical customer services team in Europe has now looked at its range of book papers.

With the increased use of four colour process printing on the specialist book papers, using both digital and offset litho, it is felt that a custom profile CMYK would be needed to obtain the optimum printed results on some of these papers.

Many of these papers do not ‘fit’ a standard CMYK ICC profile, such as the web offset PSO profiles or profiles based on Fogra 39, 47, 51 and 52 etc. This is due to the differing paper colours and paper surfaces.

Two papers were selected. Vivid, a mechanical bright white matt coated paper availably in 80 and 90 g/m2 and Lux Cream, a mechanical matt coated paper with a luxurious creamy shade.

The Vivid profile is based on the PSO LWC improved, Fogra 45L data set from ECI. The white paper point of this dataset is modified to matches the paper white of Vivid.

The TAC, total area coverage has been set at 260% with maximum GCR (Grey Component Replacement).

The Lux Cream profile is based on the PSO SC, Fogra 40L data set from ECI.

The white paper point of this dataset has been modified to match the cream paper colour of Lux Cream.

The TAC, total area coverage has been set at 260% with maximum GCR (Grey Component Replacement).

Both profiles will provide better press colour stability, improved grey balance control, less paper deformation and should show ink savings of up to 10% over conventional ICC profiles.

For the technical minded the Fogra datasets was first processed using ColorLogic’s ColorAnt dataset optimisation tool. This optimised and amended dataset was then taken into ColorLogics Copra colour profiling software to produce the Vivid and Lux Cream ICC profiles.

The CMYK primaries also have similar Lab figures as Fogra 45L.

The full technical process control specifications are available from Stora Enso.

These profiles should used be to convert images within the standard desk top publishing software’s when saving to PDF, such as Adobe CS, CC and QuarkXpress, or within other specialised colour management modules and servers within publishers, designers and printers workflows.

The release of these profiles is part of Stora Enso’s on-going programme to support its client’s use of its papers. This includes releasing more custom ICC profiles as needed and the Stora Enso Soft Proofing solution.
