Mondi has received the Building Public Trust in Corporate Reporting Award 2017 for the high quality and clarity of its sustainability reporting. The annual awards have been convened by PwC since 2002, and recognise trust, transparency and societal contribution and impact through corporate reporting by FTSE ranked companies. For the first time, consideration was given to organisations’ societal contribution and impact in each award category.
An independent panel of judges selected the company for the award. ‘It comes across clearly that Mondi’s sustainability strategy has been considered at board level, and the company uses external indicators and tools to assess impacts, which adds credibility,’ commented one judge. Judges also commended the way the company’s commitment to sustainability is backed up by 10 clear action areas and 16 defined commitments – all linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
‘Sustainability is integral to the way we think and work, which is why we are very proud to receive this award,’ said Gladys Naylor, Mondi Group head of sustainable development. ‘We have made significant progress over the years in this area and we remain committed to delivering sustainable value to our stakeholders.’
Its commitment to sustainability is embedded throughout the business, from packaging and paper products to manufacturing processes and operations. For example, the company has been recognised for its commitment to clear goals such as a 15% reduction in CO2e emissions from its pulp and paper mills by 2030, against a 2014 baseline. The group is also making significant progress against its 2020 goals across all 10 defined sustainability action areas.
Mondi has recently earned improved scores in all Environmental Paper Company Index 2017 categories, which is the WWF tool to promote transparency and continuous improvement in the pulp, paper and packaging sector. It has also improved its ranking from eighth to sixth position among FTSE 100 companies in Carbon Clear’s annual study of the ‘Sustainability Reporting Performance’ series, which highlights trends and leadership in environmental sustainability.
